Marinka Sat Down

Marinka sat down in the room on the mat, in the room by the windows. Marinka sings and sews, curses her mother bitterly:

  • Mother, may you be gone, because you left me a poor orphan to wander! Nine years have passed since you died, mother, there is no one to teach me how to embroider duck feet, duck feet upward, yellow lemons downward; how to spin thin warp and weave fine cloth. Her sister-in-law’s niece heard her, and said to her mother:
  • Go, mother, to the room to see how aunt cries, how she cries and laments and bitterly curses grandmother. When the sister-in-law heard her, she said to Marinka:
  • Quiet, dear, don’t cry, your sister-in-law will teach you to spin thin warp, to weave fine dowry gifts. Your sister-in-law also remained an orphan at six years old; quiet, dear, don’t cry, your sister-in-law will teach you.
